Supporters View OF All Ireland Win

Posted on March 26th, 2010

Catherine Clendon gives an account of St. Louis win in the All Ireland .                                      Finally An All-Ireland Title Comes To Mayo.

There was great excitement on the two coaches in Kiltimagh at 7 on that Monday morning as we left for the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght for th u16 boys B All-Ireland Final. Travelling were the vice-principal, Ms Lyons who we found out to be one hell of a supporter,Ms Anderson, Mr Vahey and Fr. Stephen the school chaplain accompanying the 2nd,3rd and transition year students. As the two coaches finally arrived in Tallaght everyones excitement turned to nerves. We went in and got seated with no sight of supporters for the opposing team. The only people there were some of the proud parents and even one or two grandparents of the Kiltimagh players. We had gotten the perfect seats in the centre of the court.
About 5 minutes after we had seated the Kiltimagh panel ran out of the dressing rooms looking eager to get started. After a round of lay-ups the other team came out looking pretty confident…eek! When the referee blew the whistle with 3 minutes to the game the lads brought it in for a team talk with Mr Kelly the coach and Micheal Moran to learn who would be starting the final. With Sean Moran and Matthew Russell on the boards, Conor Byrne and Gary Regan on the wings and Dillon Gallagher as the point guard they were confident. As the whistle blew again the game had started and instantly Kiltimagh were up with an easy lay up from Gary Regan. At this point supporters from Monaghan started flooding in the Arena. Another score from Conor Byrne again widened the gap between themselves and the team from Monaghan. All of a sudden they came back with an easy shot. When the first quarter Kiltimagh were up by a couple of baskets. With the second quarter T.J. Byrne came on for Gary Regan who was playing mighty.
When the whistle blew for half time it was my cue. I ran to the end of the Kiltimagh supporters and 1….2….3….MEXICAN WAVE!! To my surprise everyone did it…yes! Again and again everyone kept doing it. I think the coaches got a bit annoyed because the players kept watching me.. whoops? Anyways when they got into the third quarter Regan was put back on for T.J. Byrne the score was 5-13 to Kiltimagh but all of a sudden the Monaghan team started coming back and there was only 3 points in it. When the lads realised this they started coming back scoring baskets leading by 9 at the end of the third quarter. As the final quarter began Kiltimagh began to widen the gap between them and the trailing Monaghan team although the Monaghan team’s point guard did get a couple of good baskets they were no match for the Kiltimagh lads winning by 19 points! The screams from the crowd i’d say could be heard in Kiltimagh. The atmosphere in the arena lifted. Everyone was buzzing! All the lads were awarded there medals and the trophy was awarded to the captain Sean Moran.Sean was also awarded Most Valuable Player and was presented with a gold basketball.
On the way home everyone was talking about the match and when we were nearly home we got a garda escort to Kiltimagh with fires on the pavement leading up to a huge bonfire in the town and fireworks being set off. The three buses were welcomed back by a large group of the community. Pictures were taken and the trophy was shown off. Everyone was very proud. All in all a brilliant day which will never be forgotten by the people who witnessed this rare occasion.Good on you lads you done us, your families and all the culchies proud.
This is for the history books!

All Ireland Title For St. Louis

Posted on March 23rd, 2010

DSC_0173DSC_0186There was great celebrations in the national basketball arena in Tallaght as the St. Louis u-16 boys claimed their schools first national basketball title after a great battle against Patrician High school. The game started well for St. Louis with Gary Regan getting some great steals to race into a 7-0 lead before Patrician lads got off the mark with a 3 pointer but the Coilltes pressed on to hold a 13- 5 lead at the end of the first 1/4. The second 1/4was one to forget for both teams with nerves getting the better of both sides , poor finishing and easy turnovers led to a low scoring 1/4 but still the St. Louis lads led 16-7 at half-time.  As expected Patrician HS came back into the game and they upped the tempo to cut into the Kiltimagh lead and all of a sudden there was only 3 points between the sides coach Michael Kelly called a time out to stop the Carraigmacross momentum and with that Matt Russell and Dillon Gallagher went on  a scoring spree to but distance between the two teams to leave the score at the end of the 3rd 30-21. It was  in the fourth and final quarter that St. Louis dominated with Sean Moran and Conor Byrne on top in defence and Matthew , Dillon and Gary getting some brilliant scores off drives to the basket they pulled away with 3 minutes left on the clock . When the buzzer finally went , they  were up by 19 points to win on a scoreline of 44-25. Team captain Sean Moran lifted the the cup to a great cheer and also took home the MVP award for his brilliant all round display. A great crowd turned up for the home coming later that evening ,the team and their  supporters recieved a garda escort from Knock back into town where they stopped at the bonfire to be greeted by their many supporters.                                Team  Sean Moran (c), Matt Russell, John Kelly, Jamie Conroy, TJ Byrne, Paul Walsh, Dillon Gallagher, Ryan Carroll , Jack Roache, Gary Regan, Colm Walsh, Keith McCormack, Conor Byrne.    Coach Michael Kelly , ass coach Michael Moran.
